The overwhelming majority of you have given positive feedback about the coverage on this blog and about word of the gay which many of you seem to love. There are some who take offense to certain postings and this post is directed to you in the hopes of clarification.
It is my sincere hope and aspiration to unite the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, intersexual, asexual community and allies to work towards a positive future that entails full dignity, respect, and equality. There are those who argue that these identities should work separately, intersex people who don't want to be co-opted by trans people, gay people who don't feel gender identity has anything to do with sexual liberation. While all of these identities are different and have their own struggles, we all unite under an umbrella of being discriminated against because of our sexual/gender, identity and/or expression.
The Word of the Gay postings seem to bring about the most frustration among certain individuals. Word of the Gay features words, acronyms, and phrases that are positive, negative, or neutral about the LGBT community. Some words are funny, some are rare, and some are deeply offensive such as "tranny", "faggot", "hermaphrodite" and "dyke" among many others. These postings do not celebrate queerphobic terms, they are a reality and are used against us every day. This is an opportunity to define and discuss what these words mean to us and is in no way a signal that these words should be condoned nor used. Some words have been reclaimed over the course of time, but that is up to the movement, identity, and is something an individual must decide for themselves.
This blog has been dedicated to being fully inclusive and posting about how we can all embrace activism online and empower us to create the change we seek. I apologize to anyone who has been offended but it was not the intention.
